Shiatsu - what is it - and how does it work?

Shiatsu (Japanese for 'finger pressure') is a long-established holistic healthcare system, complementary to mainstream Western medicine. It has been adapted by the Japanese from the acupuncture system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, replacing needles with thumb pressure.

In the philosophy underlying Shiatsu, energy or 'Ki' flows throughout the body in a continuous circuit of defined pathways called meridians, each one relating to a physical organ. Shiatsu treatments aim to redistribute this energy flow, which is often uneven - excessive in areas of heat or tension and depleted in areas which may feel weak or cold - giving rise to a range of symptoms.

Your treatment session

During your Shiatsu session, I will apply thumb, palm and finger pressure to specific points on the relevant meridians, to allow the energy within them to flow freely round your body. This has the effect of gradually relaxing areas of tension and reducing pain, while re-energising your body and clearing your mind - helping to improve your physical, psychological and emotional symptoms as well as restoring health and balance to your whole system.

In addition I may apply massage and stretches to free up areas of tension, (often in the neck and shoulders) and ease stiff joints, which tend to accompany a state of stress, tension or pain. However, such dynamic treatment is not suitable for everyone and so each session is tailored to the specific needs and state of health of the individual. A session can be as gentle as required, for example with the elderly and those with chronic health problems. This makes Shiatsu a very versatile and safe treatment suitable for men, women and children of all ages, from the very frail to the super-fit.

Immediately after your Shiatsu session, you are likely to feel very relaxed - often with increased energy and flexibility, while the full benefits of the treatment are usually felt two or three days later.

Practical Details

£35 per session

Treatments normally take place on a treatment couch, (or on a chair if required).

I suggest that you wear warm, comfortable clothing, e.g. sweatshirt, tracksuit trousers and cotton socks, also that you do not eat heavily in the 2 hours before your Shiatsu session. After your treatment I recommend that you drink plenty of water and allow time to rest if possible.

First session: 1hr 15mins (allowing time for a confidential case history, taking account of your health concerns, any medical conditions/medication, diet and lifestyle. This enables me to obtain a full picture of your overall health and so give you a more effective treatment.)

Follow-up sessions: 1hr (allowing time for an update of your overall health).
